In 1925 (Taisho 14), Kawamura Tokutaro—a leader of the Shinbashi hanamachi concerned about the lack of a performance hall in Tokyo compared to Kyoto and Osaka—founded the Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre, with the inaugural Azuma Odori as its opening performance. Held annually since, with wartime interruption, it has continued for over 100 years.

First held on April 1, 1925 as the opening performance of Shinbashi Enbujo Theatre. Interrupted by the WWII air raids that destroyed the theatre, it resumed as the 15th edition in 1948. Revival performances featured scripts by literary masters Kawabata, Tanizaki, and Yoshikawa. Held annually in May since 1982. In 2020–2021, a new format combining video and dance was attempted due to COVID. The 100th commemorative performance was held in May 2025.
