葵祭・春日祭とともに日本三大勅祭の一つ。
真夜中に山上の本殿で神輿3基に御霊を奉還する儀式から始まり、約500人のお供とともに山麓の頓宮へと下る行列が行われる。毎年9月15日斎行。
