A beloved summer tradition of Shonan dating back to 1948. Approximately 2,500 fireworks brilliantly illuminate the night sky and sea surface at Yuigahama Beach and Zaimokuza Beach in the ancient capital. The most distinctive feature is the "underwater fireworks," a hallmark of the Kamakura fireworks display, where fireworks are thrown into the sea from moving boats and bloom in fan-shaped patterns on the water surface, creating a fantastical sight unique to this event. Approximately 160,000 visitors attend annually.

The "underwater fireworks," thrown from boats into the sea and opening in fan shapes on the water surface, are the signature attraction and biggest highlight. The competition between large chrysanthemum shells blooming in the night sky and the semi-circular underwater fireworks on the water surface creates a beauty found nowhere else. About 2,500 fireworks are packed into approximately 50 minutes with excellent pacing.
First held in 1948, this historic fireworks festival is now in its 78th edition. It began as a symbol of postwar reconstruction and has taken root as a traditional summer event coloring the ancient capital of Kamakura.

A traditional fireworks festival held at Zaimokuza Beach and Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura. The signature attraction is the "underwater fireworks" thrown from boats into the sea, which spread dramatically in fan shapes above the water and produce powerful booming sounds that resonate in your chest, captivating the audience. While the total of about 2,500 fireworks is not the largest scale, the beauty of fireworks against the ocean backdrop and the power of the underwater fireworks deliver high satisfaction. Watching from the sandy beach offers an open feel, but be aware that the Kamakura Station area becomes severely congested coming and going.
