Shinagawa Shrine Grand Festival 2026
An annual grand festival held every June at Shinagawa Shrine in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Also known as 'Kita no Tenno-sai' (Northern Tenno Festival), the mikoshi bears a sacred 'tenka hitomame' mask on its roof as it processes through Shinagawa. The distinctive 'Jonan-katsugi' carrying style, where bearers on each side roughly jostle and compete in a show of strength, creates a thrilling spectacle. Many food stalls line the old Tokaido road, allowing visitors to enjoy the festival while feeling the history of Shinagawa-juku. The newly crafted Aoi mikoshi procession is also a highlight.
