Jindai Botanical Gardens Spring Rose Festa

Approximately 400 varieties and 5,200 roses make this one of Tokyo's largest rose gardens. Early morning openings at 8 AM on weekends offer the richest rose fragrances. Rose concerts on 5/23-24 (jazz/classical), Chofu International Music Festival's floral concert on 5/30.

Jindai Botanical Gardens, opened in 1961, is a metropolitan botanical garden. The rose garden has been a centerpiece since opening, collecting domestic and international varieties to achieve the top scale in Tokyo. The 'Spring Rose Festa' is an established annual popular event.

5-31-10 Jindaiji-Motomachi, Chofu, Tokyo. About 15 minutes by bus from the north exit of Chofu Station (Keio Line) to 'Jindai Shokubutsu Koen-mae.' Buses also available from Mitaka and Kichijoji stations (JR Chuo Line). Parking available (paid, 228 spaces).

Weekends during peak bloom (mid to late May) are very crowded. The 8 AM early morning opening is the most relaxed time. Weekday mornings are also recommended. Public transportation is advised as the parking lot fills up quickly.

Admission: adults 500 yen, seniors (65+) 250 yen, junior high school students 200 yen, elementary school and under free. Hours: 9:30-17:00 (last entry 16:00). Combining a visit with Jindaiji Temple and soba noodles for lunch is recommended.
